Dual Credit
-
A dual credit class is a course that allows high school students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. These classes are offered in partnership with colleges/universities and can be taken either at a District 214 high school or on a college campus.
District 214 offers more than 80 dual credit courses with over 200 teachers credentialed to teach them. These courses provide students with college-level experiences in both core and career areas, preparation for post-secondary success, and opportunities to earn early college credit.
Early college credit programming is multifaceted, providing academic, financial, and personal benefits that can positively shape students’ educational journeys and future success. Examples of how it provides a head start in both academic and personal development to students includes:
- A smooth transition into college: The rigor of expectations of higher education creates momentum to continue pursuing a postsecondary education.
- Cost savings: Completing college-level courses in high school saves time and money.
- Career exploration: Exploring different fields of study before committing to a college major leads to more informed academic and professional decisions.
- Higher graduation rates: Early exposure to college-level academics and the college environment increases the likelihood of high school graduation.
- Competitive edge: Early college credit programs enhance college applications by demonstrating academic readiness, ambition, and a commitment to learning.
- Personal growth: Rigorous coursework pushes students to gain confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and become more independent learners.
