District 214 kicked off an exciting new chapter with the official launch of Girls Flag Football, following the sport’s recent recognition by the Illinois High School Association. This initiative marks a significant milestone for the District, with teams established at all six comprehensive high schools, offering a new platform for female athletes to shine.
As the inaugural season unfolds, excitement is buzzing throughout the school community. Coaches and players alike are eager to see the lasting impact this program will have on girls' sports in the District.
One of the standout moments this season was Hersey’s Coach Starr Dorsey being named the Chicago Bears Flag Football Coach of the Week, a recognition that underscores her dedication to her players and the sport. “I was extremely honored to receive this recognition, especially because it allowed our girls to see how their hardwork and dedication to embracing and learning a new sport is paying off,” said Dorsey. “Personally, I think it should be ‘Coaching Staff of the Week’ because without my assistants our program would not be playing at the high level we are.”
Coach Dorsey emphasized the overwhelming support from the Hersey community, including staff, parents and local youth football teams like the Arlington Dawgs. “There’s been so much excitement around the school and community. I am constantly getting stopped by staff asking about our games and when we play,” she shared. “The enthusiasm isn’t just at the high school level—it's starting at a very young age, and that’s exciting for the future of the sport.”
At Prospect High School, Coach Monica Donner’s team finished with a record of 13-5 and an impressive streak of six shutouts. “The hype is big,” said Donner. “We’ve received incredible support from staff, parents and the community, which has fueled our success.”
For both coaches, the opportunity to be part of the inaugural season has been a rewarding experience. “It’s amazing to be part of something brand new and to have such a dedicated support staff behind me,” said Donner. “Our program wouldn’t be where it is without the hard work of the players and my incredible coaching team.”
With an overall record of 15-3 and a regional championship under their belt, Coach Dorsey expressed her pride in her team’s performance. “This season has exceeded my expectations,” she said. “I’m so proud of these girls for coming out, trying something new, and embracing everything we’re doing.”
As Girls Flag Football wraps up its first season, both coaches are optimistic about its future, seeing it as an essential part of the growth and popularity of women’s sports.
“It’s great to give these athletes another sport to compete in during the fall,” said Dorsey. “This sport is growing rapidly, and I can see it continuing to thrive for years to come.”
