District 214 Logo

  • As educators, we are always working hard to ensure our curriculum is relevant beyond high school and that we’re meeting students where they’re intellectually, socially and emotionally. To do this, everyone, including students and staff, must challenge their intellectual curiosity and continue to move forward. That forward-thinking culture is conveyed in the swoop of the “D” housed within the bold, red box. At the same time, as a District we are rooted in excellence and are recognized as an educational leader, which results in stability. This is conveyed in the boldness and strength in the font size and weight of the “214.” The color red was selected to represent energy and youth, and is the only color not used by one of our current District schools.

    The District 214 Logo is the combined symbol and wordmark.


    Logo Development Criteria

    In developing a new logo design for District 214, guidelines were established that would help define the design:

    • Elevate the design style
    • A more timeless quality
    • Emphasize the numbers 2 - 1 - 4
    • Intentionally did not use common, school symbols such as books, schoolhouses, graduation caps and math symbols. These symbols can be limiting in their interpretation and the perception of what D214 represents to internal and external audiences.
    • As an innovative school district, the introduction of a symbol reflecting forward moving and forward thinking was needed
    • Provide a versatile design for use on print and digital media including brochures, signage, video, social media and websites
    • Differentiate it from other school district logos
    • Complement the already well established individual District 214 school logos


    For logo placement on front covers and stand-alone designs, such as posters and premiums, the following guidelines apply.

    • Logo width must be no larger than 1/3 of the width of the paper or medium where it appears.
    • On the cover page of print communication materials, the logo is positioned on the bottom margin.
    • The logo appears only on the front and back covers of print communication materials.
    • Background space (staging) around the logo should be clear of any other graphic elements.

    Logo Staging

    To enhance visual impact, a minimum staging area, or “white space,” has been established for the logo. No other element can violate this white space, including type or graphics. The amount of staging area or white space should
    be one-eighth the width of the logo.

    Here is how to calculate the size of the staging area:

    • Measure the horizontal size (width) of the Logo from the left edge of the symbol to the right edge of the wordmark, as shown. This is the “X” width.
    • To find the required size of the white space on all four sides surrounding the Logo, multiply the “X” width times 1/8 (one-eighth).

    Preferred and Alternative Logo Usage

    To allow the logo maximum visibility and versatility on a range of backgrounds and media, preferred and alternative logo usages have been established for white, medium, and dark backgrounds is shown below:
