District 214 Seal of Biliteracy

  • Seal of Biliteracy Assessment Information
    Students at District 214 have the opportunity to be recognized by the State of Illinois for earning proficiency in English and an additional language. The Illinois State Board of Education's Seal of Biliteracy Program will place an official seal on diplomas and official recognition will be placed on transcripts of students who qualify. Illinois public post-secondary institutions must grant university language credit to recipients of the Seal of Biliteracy.

    Students who do not meet Intermediate high, but who demonstrate a proficiency of Intermediate low can receive a notation of Commendation.

    What are the specific requirements to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy or Commendation?

    Students must demonstrate English proficiency and proficiency in another language other than English. The specific score requirements are listed on the PDF below:

    Language Exams Available at the District 214 administrations:

    • The AAPPL Form B: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. 
    • The Avant Stamp 4S: Hebrew, Hindi, and Polish. 
    • ALTA Exam: Afrikaans, Albanian, Amharic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Burmese, Cambodian, Cape Verdean, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dari, Dutch, Farsi, Finnish, Ga, Greek, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hausa, Hmong, Hungarian, Indonesian, Jamaican Patois, Kannada, Karenni, Kazakh, Kinyarwanda, Macedonian, Malay, Malayalam, Mongolian, Norwegian, Pashto, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Serbian, Sinhala, Slovak, Slovenian, Somali, Swahili, Swedish, Tagalog, Tajik, Tamil, Thai, Tigrinya, Turkish, Turkmen, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, Wolof, Yoruba

    The Language exams are digital assessments taken on the student's iPad. The language exams tests studetns in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

    Spring Language Tests Dates:
    Your high school will offer language testing in February or March during the school day. After registration closes, your World Language Social Science Division Head will contact you with more information about the exact dates and times of testing at your school. Testing will take place sometime between February 12 and March 15. Each high school will pick a testing date(s) for their school. 

    Test results will be emailed to students and parents/guardians in April.

    Cost: $25
    (Students that are approved for free or reduced lunch will receive a reduced cost when completing registration)

    High School Registration: (Open January 10 - February 2)

    • Register through the Infinite Campus Portal. Select School Store on the left side menu, Select Shop, Select Products under Register for the Seal of Biliteracy.
