Transition Courses and Opportunities

  • District 214 offers students who are not yet college ready in math or English at the start of their senior year opportunities to enroll in a math or English college transitional course.

Many colleges and universities require students who do not test or place at a set level in math or English to take remedial or developmental coursework when they enter college. However, many students can be inappropriately placed into developmental coursework based on those tests. This makes it more difficult for a student to persist and complete a degree.

District 214’s college transition courses are designed to help students develop the skills for postsecondary success. Students who earn an A,B, or C in these courses while in high school will receive appropriate placement into college-level math and English courses when they enroll in community college.

Students wishing to take college transition courses during their senior year should discuss options with their counselor.

    College Transitional Math

Juniors who are not yet college ready in math may take a college transition math course their senior year. These courses will help prepare students to enter college-level math courses.

District 214 graduates who have successfully completed this course with a C or better are guaranteed placement in college-level math at Harper College.

Starting with the class of 2020, those who successfully complete this course with a C or better are guaranteed placement in college-level math at all Illinois community colleges and some universities. This placement is valid for 18 months after completion of the course.
